Lumene Tango for Two

Eye Candy: January and February NOTDs

I haven’t done very much nail art these past two months but I thought I would share some of the manicures I’ve done. Sometimes I try something new and it doesn’t work out, so I remove the polish right away. And sometimes I forget to take a picture even if I love the manicure. I have to get better about that :)

Essie Play Date and BeYu 397

Essie Play Date and BeYu 397

The first picture shows the third manicure of 2016. It is BeYu 397 on top of Essie’s Play Date. For some reason I didn’t like this combination very much when I wore it but in the picture it looks OK.

OPI Do You Think I'm Tex-y? and BeYu 397

OPI Do You Think I’m Tex-y? and BeYu 397

In the fourth manicure of the year I also used BeYu’s 397 glitter polish. I did a jelly sandwich using OPI’s Do You Think I’m Tex-y? as the jelly. Jelly sandwich is done by painting your nails with a sheer nail polish, then adding a coat glitter polish and then another coat of the polish you put on first. It’s trial and error to find the polishes that work together. This is a combination I like a lot but unfortunately the BeYu polish doesn’t want to dry anymore, so after doing this manicure I decided to ditch the polish. Fortunately, Make Up Store’s Asun works just as well with the OPI polish. The picture is actually from last May because apparently I didn’t take a picture this time around, probably because I didn’t have time to take a picture before the manicure was ruined.

P2 Rich & Royal

Another picture from last year but this time I didn’t use the stickers. This is P2′s Rich & Royal. I love this shade of polish so much that I actually bought Essie’s Chinchilly last month which is an exact dupe of the P2 polish. The P2 polish is no longer available and I like both of the polishes, so it’s OK to keep them both, right?

Mavala Freesia in daylight

Mavala’s Freesia is a chameleon. It looks different in different lighting. I like the daylight version the best. This polish is part of the recent collection by Mavala and I got this polish in January during one of my weaker moments. I forgot to mention in my last post that I also used up two sticker sheets last month. These tulips were the other stickers I used up. I loved these stickers, they were so pretty, but they were getting old and I had to use them up. When stickers get old they don’t adhere well to the polish anymore and these stickers started to show those symptoms.

Lumene Tango for Two

Lumene Tango for Two

This was the second to last manicure I got out of Lumene’s Tango for Two. I loooooooved this manicure and I still love it when I look at the picture :) The last time I used this polish I combined it with Essie’s As Gold as it Gets and it looked like this:

Not one of the greatest manicures ever as far as the quality goes…

The last picture I’m going to share with you is the polish I’m using up at the moment. It’s not an interesting photo but at least you can see the color I’m working with. The idea is to use only this polish until it’s used up. It will challenge me to figure out a new manicure each time so that I don’t get bored with it. I’ll try and remember to take a picture of each manicure (even if I mess it up) so that I can share them with you :) So, the polish is – drum roll, please – Mavala’s Velvet!

The manicure in the picture is me using this polish for the first time in a couple of years, I think. I got this originally from a friend who didn’t like it on her nails. I already did a second manicure with this polish but it didn’t turn out great so I removed it instantly. Nevertheless, I took a picture of it and I will share it with you as soon as I have used up the bottle completely. I shall have a post with all the manicures I did with this polish. Stay tuned for that! Before that I shall figure out how to show you my entire nail polish collection and storage! I got a request from one of my readers to show my collection, so naturally I want to do that :)

Until next time!

Project Update: February 2016

I was planning on doing an update at the end of every month but life has a way of getting in the way sometimes :) Anyway, here is what I have been doing in the beginning of the year as far as nail polishes go.

In January I managed to use up THREE nail polishes! It is a lot more than I was expecting and finishing the three bottles made me very happy! Here they are in a group photo. The black line marks the level of the polish as the project started.

Mac Vestral White, Lumene Tango for Two and Make up Store Asun

Granted, none of these bottles had very much polish left in them but finishing them feels like an achievement anyway. Mac’s Vestral White I used on my nail wheels to cover the swatches of polishes I have gotten rid of. This may seem like cheating but having the colors I don’t own anymore hidden felt like a weight off my shoulders, so I think it was a necessary step. Also, I still have two more white polishes in my collection, so it’s not like I have to run out and get a new white polish. Lumene’s Tango for Two was a favorite of mine but it had so little polish left in the bottle so I thought it best to use it up before it’s unusable. Also, I felt like wearing a bright red on my nails after the Christmasy reds that I wore in December. OPI’s Aloha from OPI is very similar to this so I am not too worried that I used up the Lumene polish. Make up Store’s Asun had only two uses left in the bottle so it was easy to use it up. It looks like there is still some polish left in the bottle but it is impossible to get it out. I bought a back-up bottle of this polish last year so it’s good that the older bottle is used up now.

On to the progress on my base and top coats, cuticle oil and Seche Restore.

Seche Restore, Seche Vite, Sally Hansen Cuticle Oil, Trind Nail Repair Matte

I used up Seche Vite and Trind Nail Repair Matte this month. In the picture it looks like the Seche Vite bottle has some polish left in it but it is actually mostly empty. The Trind base coat bottle is definitely not empty, though. I hated this base coat to begin with and when it started to ruin the manicures when it got thicker and when I noticed that thinner wasn’t thinning it I decided to call it quits with this base coat. At least I used up most of it.

I got to use a lot of thinner this month because I was using up so many polishes, the level of Seche Restore is about a half of a centimeter lower now than at the beginning of January. Sally Hansen’s Cuticle Oil has less product in it too, but I definitely could have used it a lot more.

Trind Nail Repair Matte and BeYu 397

Here is a better picture of the Trind Base coat where you can see how much was left in the bottle. I also had BeYu’s 397 glitter polish in my project and I used it a couple of times but I decided to toss it for two reasons. One, it ruins the manicures, it never dries and thinner doesn’t help. Two, whenever I wore it, I didn’t really like it and I never really wanted to wear it at all. So, bye bye.

Two of the polishes I picked for the project, namely Depend 5 and Depend Glitter Base Coat, I did not wear at all.

In the beginning of the month I had some trouble in staying away from shops that sell nail polish and I bought seven new nail polishes. Most of the polishes I regretted instantly as soon as I got home. This made me think very hard on how I could stop myself from buying new nail polishes. I decided to pick out my absolute favorite nail polishes and bring them out from my closet (where I keep my collection) and set them somewhere I can see them. (YOU can see the polishes in my previous post :) ) I’m happy to say this method has worked well so far! I have not bought a bottle of nail polish since January 15. Picking out my favorites also made me think very hard about what polishes I want to keep in my collection. This led me to remove some polishes from the collection. For instance, I decided to get rid of most of my striping polishes because I simply never use them. At the beginning of the year I owned 123 bottles of nail polish and after all the buying and decluttering I now own 113 bottles. It feels disappointing that I still have so many polishes even though I have decluttered so many! But I still have hope that some day I will have a  moderately sized collection and everything in it gets used and loved.

This month (February) I have concentrated on using some of my favorite polishes as well as trying on some polishes I wasn’t sure if I wanted to keep in my collection and colors I have bought but not used yet. I predict that soon I will get back into using up some polishes :) In the next post I will give you some eye candy and show some of the manicures I have done this year!
